Before you go to India

The practical things guests ask us most before their first trip. Rules change, so we check the current position for your nationality when you book.

Visa

Most visitors need a visa. Citizens of most countries can apply online for an e-Visa, at least four days before arrival.

Apply only on the official site, indianvisaonline.gov.in. Look-alike sites charge extra for the same form.

Parts of Ladakh near the borders (Nubra, Pangong) need a protected area permit. We arrange it.

Money

The currency is the Indian rupee. Cards work in hotels, restaurants and larger shops in cities; carry cash for markets, tips and small towns. Cash machines are easy to find in cities.

Tell your bank before you travel, so that your card is not blocked.

Health

See your doctor or a travel clinic six to eight weeks before you leave, for vaccinations and advice on malaria for the regions you will visit.

Drink bottled or filtered water; our cars carry bottled water. Leh, in Ladakh, is at about 3,500 metres: plan two quiet days when you arrive.

Dress and customs

Cover your shoulders and knees in temples, mosques and gurdwaras, and take your shoes off at the door; a light scarf is useful for both men and women.

Ask before photographing people. Eat and pass things with your right hand. Public affection is best kept discreet.

Tipping

Tips are part of guides' and drivers' income and are expected for good service. Your specialist gives you a short guide to tipping with your travel documents.

Phones and internet

Hotels have Wi-Fi. For mobile data, buy an eSIM before you leave, or a local SIM card on arrival with your passport and visa.

Plugs and power

230 volts. Sockets take round-pin plugs (types C, D and M): bring an adapter.

Time

India is 4½ hours ahead of Paris in winter and 3½ hours in summer; 5½ and 4½ hours ahead of London.

Local costs

What things cost

Your trip is priced in advance, but it helps to know what small things cost. Rough prices in 2026:

A cup of tea from a stall
INR 20–30
Bottled water, 1 litre
INR 20–40
Lunch in a simple restaurant
INR 300–800 per person
Dinner in a good hotel restaurant
