Responsible travel

Travel that leaves more than it takes

Private, small-scale travel can do a lot of good: it pays local people fairly, it supports family businesses, and it can be gentle on the places it visits. Here is how we try to do that.

How we work

What we do

Local people first

We work with guides, drivers and family-run guesthouses from the regions you visit, and we choose them for their knowledge and their care.

Fair to suppliers

We pay the families, guides and small hotels we work with directly and on time.

Small groups

Private journeys mean small numbers in fragile places: a village, a monastery, a forest.

Wildlife with respect

We follow park rules, use naturalists who keep their distance from animals, and do not book attractions that keep wild animals for entertainment. We do not book elephant rides.

On your journey

What you can do

Dress and behaviour

Cover shoulders and knees in temples, mosques and villages, and take off your shoes where others do. Your guide will tell you what is expected.

Photographs

Ask before photographing people, and respect a no. Do not photograph cremations or ceremonies unless you are invited to.

Plastic and water

Carry a refillable bottle and ask your guide or hotel where to fill it.

Spending locally

Buy crafts from the people who make them, eat in local restaurants, and tip guides, drivers and hotel staff directly.
