Getting there

Flights and getting around

You book your international flights, and we arrange everything from the moment you land. This is how to get there, and how to move between the four countries.

From Europe

Flights from Paris and London

Schedules change each season; check with the airlines before you book. Approximate flying times without stops:

India: Delhi
Nonstop from Paris (Air France, about 8½ hours) and from London (several airlines, about 9 hours). The best arrival for Rajasthan, Agra, Varanasi and Ladakh.
India: Mumbai and Bengaluru
Nonstop from Paris and London, about 9½ to 10½ hours. Convenient for Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Goa.
India: other cities
Jaipur, Kochi, Chennai and Goa through the Gulf (Doha, Dubai, Abu Dhabi) or via Delhi or Mumbai.
Nepal: Kathmandu
The only nonstop flights from Europe are Turkish Airlines from Istanbul, about 7 hours. Otherwise one stop via Delhi, Doha or Dubai; 12 to 15 hours in all from Paris or London.
Bhutan: Paro
No flights from Europe. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly to Paro from Delhi, Kathmandu, Bangkok, Kolkata and a few other cities.
Sri Lanka: Colombo
Nonstop from London and Paris with SriLankan Airlines, about 11 hours; check the season dates. Otherwise one stop through the Gulf.

Flying into Bhutan

The landing at Paro

Paro sits in a narrow valley, and planes land only in daylight, by sight, with specially trained pilots. Morning flights are the most reliable, because afternoon wind and monsoon cloud cause most delays.

Fares into Paro hardly change through the year, but seats are limited, especially in festival weeks. Book early, sit on the left from Delhi or Kathmandu for the view of the Himalaya, and leave a spare night before a long-haul connection home.

Between countries

Combining two countries

Delhi – Kathmandu
About 1½ hours
Kathmandu – Paro
About 1 hour, with views of Everest on a clear day
Delhi – Paro
About 2 hours
South India – Colombo
About 1 to 2 hours from Chennai, Bengaluru, Kochi or Thiruvananthapuram
Bhutan by road

Once you arrive

How you travel with us

By car

A private car and driver for the whole trip. Indian roads are slow: Delhi to Agra takes about four hours by expressway, Jaipur to Jodhpur five to six. We plan drives of four to five hours at most, with stops.

By train

Some journeys are faster and more pleasant by train: Delhi to Agra in under two hours, or the hill railways of Darjeeling, Shimla and Sri Lanka. We book reserved seats.

By plane

For long distances we use domestic flights: Delhi to Leh, Varanasi, Udaipur or Kochi, Kathmandu to Pokhara. Mountain flights depend on the weather, so we keep a spare day in the plan.

On arrival

Your driver meets you at arrivals, whatever the time. Many flights from Europe land in Delhi late at night or early in the morning; we book your first night so the room is ready when you arrive.
