What you love
Luxury trains and rail journeys
A week on a palace on wheels through Rajasthan, a toy train climbing to Darjeeling or Shimla, the tea country of Sri Lanka from an open window: some journeys are best made by rail.
India's luxury trains are hotels on rails: private cabins, dining cars and guided visits at each stop, on routes of a few days to a week. They run in the cooler months and sell out early.
For a shorter taste, the mountain railways of Darjeeling, Shimla and the Nilgiris are World Heritage Sites, and Sri Lanka's hill-country line is one of the most beautiful train rides in Asia. We fit them into any journey.

- Maharajas' Express
- India's most luxurious train, on routes of three to six nights through Rajasthan and Agra; one route continues to Varanasi.
- Palace on Wheels
- The original palace train: a week through Rajasthan's forts and palaces from Delhi.
- Golden Chariot
- Four to seven days through Karnataka, Goa, Tamil Nadu and Kerala: temples, palaces and wildlife in the south.
- Mountain railways
- The toy trains to Darjeeling and Shimla, and the Nilgiri line to Ooty: short rides on World Heritage railways.
- Sri Lanka's hill country
- The train through the tea estates to Ella. After the late-2025 cyclone, trains run between Nanu Oya and Ella while the line from Kandy is repaired; we check the latest before you book.
